FAQ

Yearly Pay Progression Changes

With the implementation of the 2018 NHS pay deal, the yearly pay progression for Agenda for Change terms has evolved. Formerly tied to spine points, it now relies on years of experience within the band.

No Overlap in NHS Pay Bands

The 2018 NHS pay deal eliminated overlap between bands to ensure fair compensation. This prevents individuals with lower responsibilities from earning more than those with higher responsibilities.

Regional Differences in NHS Pay

NHS worker pay variations across countries result from decisions made by the devolved governments in each of the four nations.

Moving Between Pay Bands

When transitioning to a higher pay band, staff start at the minimum pay point. Conversely, voluntary or other moves to a lower pay band typically position staff at the top pay point.

Pension

Every NHS Pension Scheme participant contributes a percentage of their pensionable pay to the scheme monthly, known as the contribution rate. Your contribution is now determined by your actual annual rate of pay rather than your whole-time equivalent. If you work part-time, your contribution rate may be lower, as it is now calculated based on your annual earnings, contrary to the previous method, which was based on a full-time equivalent.
