Looking for the exact numbers? See our dedicated £45,000 after tax page — live figures, updated every tax year, with income tax, National Insurance and take-home pay per year, month and week.
Take-home figures published in a blog post go stale every April when tax thresholds change, so rather than repeating numbers here, this guide covers what actually determines your take-home pay on a £45,000 salary.
On the standard tax code (1257L), the first £12,570 you earn is your tax-free personal allowance. Everything above that is taxed at the basic rate, and you also pay employee National Insurance on earnings above the same threshold. At £45,000 you’re still below the higher-rate threshold (£50,270), but a decent pay rise or bonus could push some of your income into the 40% band.
