Understanding UCAS Points
What are UCAS Points?
UCAS Tariff points are a way of measuring the relative value of all qualifications. Universities and colleges may use UCAS points in their entry requirements, allowing applicants with different qualifications to be compared.
How Points are Calculated
Different qualifications and grades are worth different numbers of points. For example, an A* at A-level is worth 56 points, while an A is worth 48 points. The UCAS points system allows for fair comparison between different qualification types, such as A-levels, BTECs, Scottish Highers, and International Baccalaureate.
Using Points for University Applications
Many university courses specify a minimum number of UCAS points needed for entry. For example, a course might require 112 UCAS points. You can achieve this through various combinations of qualifications, such as:
- A-levels: Grades BBC (112 points)
- BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM (112 points)
- A combination of different qualifications totaling 112 points

Important Considerations
Subject Requirements
While UCAS points give a numerical value to your qualifications, many universities also have specific subject requirements. For example, a Medicine course might require Chemistry and Biology A-levels, regardless of your total UCAS points.
Grade Requirements
Some universities make offers based on specific grades rather than UCAS points. For example, they might ask for ABB at A-level rather than 128 UCAS points.
Qualification Combinations
Universities may have rules about which qualifications can be combined. For example, some might not count certain qualifications together if they cover similar content.
