How Your Pension Is Calculated

NHS 2015 Pension Scheme Calculation

The NHS 2015 Pension Scheme is a Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) scheme. Here's how your pension is calculated:

For detailed information on NHS pension contribution rates, visit the BMA's NHS pension contribution rates guide.

  • Annual Pension Accrual: Each year, you build up a pension pot worth 1/54th (approximately 1.85%) of your pensionable earnings for that year
  • Revaluation: Each pension pot is then revalued annually by Treasury Order percentage plus 1.5% until retirement
  • Total Pension: Your final pension is the sum of all these revalued pension pots

Example Calculation

For example, if your pensionable earnings in a year are £30,000:

  • Your pension pot for that year would be: £30,000 × (1/54) = £555.56
  • This pot would then be revalued each year by Treasury Order percentage + 1.5% until retirement
  • If you had 40 years of service, you might accumulate 40 such pots, each growing at different rates

Salary Calculation

Your pensionable earnings are calculated based on:

  • Base Salary: Determined by your NHS band and years of experience
  • Location Allowance: Additional payment based on your work location (Inner London, Outer London, Fringe, or Rest of UK)
  • Unsocial Hours Income: Any additional income from working unsocial hours

Future Projections

For future years, the calculator applies your selected pay rise prediction to estimate salary growth, and your selected Treasury Order prediction to estimate pension pot growth.

📅
